========================

1.  Welcome!  This is the fourth posting of the ACT in New England List (if you missed the previous postings, you can read them here).  The primary purpose of this list is to inform New Englanders of upcoming ACT training opportunities in the area.  A secondary purpose is to support the budding ACT community here.  Regarding the future of this list: I am open to any and all ideas.  In the meantime, if you hear about any sort of ACT training in New England, please let me know so I can get the info up on the site and out to the list ASAP.  And if you are having a training of your own, please let me know and I will help to create a listing for you.

Regarding the emails:  These mailings will be infrequent and relatively simple.  I will send them in this text format to be sure everyone can read the content.  I will provide links to our local website (www.actinnewengland.com) to the ACBS site, and other relevant sites for more detailed info.

2.  ACT Trainings in New England.

  • Elizabeth Kubik and I will be hosting another Introduction to ACT  workshop in Portland on Friday, October 24, 2008 from 9 am to 4:30 pm.  Check the ACT in New England page for details or contact us if you have questions.
  • On the horizon:  I will be doing a full-day ACT training, Making Bold Moves: Enhancing Your Practice with Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, for the New Hampshire Psychological Association (NHPA) next March (2009).  Check for updates HERE.

3.  Online Trainings & Distance Learning.  These trainings are not exactly in New England, but they are available to New Englanders.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy by Steven Hayes.  This training is available online through Psychotherapy Networker and includes CEs.
  • Russ Harris, MD is offering an online course on ACT called ACT in a Nutshell.  The e-course is described as "a unique ten week e-course for professionals, that teaches you how to deliver ACT simply, quickly and effectively."  Russ has other e-courses scheduled for release in June and August of 2008.  Click HERE for details.

4.  Online Audio Programs.  Another great resource for distance learning is the website for the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS).  The site includes both video (requires login) and audio programs free to members of ACBS.  Remember, ACBS has a policy of values-based dues, meaning that you pay only what you think the membership is worth to you (as low as $1).  For this fee, you get access to a great deal of useful content, including these audio files. (Note: Some of the online content can be accessed on the web without joining ACBS—you just need to find it; see below)   In this issue of the e-newsletter, I will highlight a few of the audio programs currently listed on the ACBS site (full list here):

  • 6 ACT Conversations.  This is a six-session e-learning program hosted by Julian McNally at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.  The sessions are offered through the Counselling Service at RMIT and are designed to facilitate “emotion intelligence skills” among its students.
  • A Clincian’s Guide to Stimulus Control by Kelly Wilson.  This recorded lecture by Kelly Wilson was for an online learning community called Practice Ground.
  • ACT in Early Intervention for Psychosis by Eric Morris, Joseph Oliver, Louise Johns, Majella Byrne & Ellen Craig.  Details at the ACBS site.  The abstract for this talk describes the program as “helping first episode clients to recover from psychosis through the development of a more mindful approach toward unusual experiences and critical appraisals, and committing to values-based actions.”  This presentation occurred at the recent ACT Summer Institute (SI4) in Chicago and details the program and preliminary research on this topic.
  • Functionally Speaking: A Third Wave Podcast hosted by DJ Moran.  Four episodes of the podcast can be accessed from DJ’s blog or through this page. According to the website, “This podcast will present material about modern cognitive-behavior therapy, clinical behavior analysis, mindfulness, and other related topics.”
  • Introduction to Defusion by Jason Luoma.  This two-part presentation provides theory and useful clinical direction on using cognitive defusion, one aspect of ACT that can be readily learned and applied early in one’s use of ACT in-session with clients.
  • Several interviews with Steven Hayes are available on the ACT Audio page and provide a nice introduction to ACT.

5.  Other Trainings.  Another place to find ACT trainings is at conferences that cater to behavioral and cognitive-behavioral therapists.  The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) annual conference in November often has conference workshops or pre-conference institutes on ACT, so keep your eyes on this opportunity.  ABCT will be in Orlando, Florida this year.  The preliminary schedule includes an invited address, The Roots of Compassion, by Steven Hayes on Friday of that weekend, and a Master Clinician Series, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy for Anxiety Disorders, by John P. Forsyth and Georg H. Eifert.  It is likely that there will be other ACT programming at the conference; check the ABCT conference schedule online as it develops.  Several other events in the Master Clinician Series include prominent figures in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP).

**Reminder:  The full listing of ACT trainings nationwide and worldwide is available at the ACBS site.**

6.  Next annual ACT/RFT event.  The next large ACT/RFT gathering will be an international gathering.  The 3rd World Conference on ACT, RFT, and Contextual Behavioral Science will be in Summer 2009 in Enschede (pronounced EN-sha-day), The Netherlands.  Check the ACBS site for details closer to the event.

Thanks for reading.  I hope you enjoyed the update.  Please send me your thoughts and feedback.  Feel free to forward this to anyone you know to be interested in ACT.

Sincerely,

Joel
